It looked as if it was going to follow a familiar script at Goodison Park.

Everton's attacks again lacked pace and width due to the newly recruited No. 10s - Wayne Rooney and Gylfi Sigurdsson - shoehorned into the starting XI against Watford, and the first half trundled to an underwhelming 0-0 scoreline.

The second stanza couldn't have been more different. Five goals, two penalties, injuries, and some exuberant gesticulating from Toffees caretaker David Unsworth were the ingredients for what will be one of this season's standout matches.

Here's what happened on Merseyside:

46' - Watford takes the lead just 29 seconds into the second half, when Everton's defence is already a disorganised mess. Andre Gray lofts the ball over Jonjoe Kenny to find Richarlison, who rounds Jordan Pickford and stabs home.

59' - Watford goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes looks groggy after being caught in a tangle of legs. The Brazilian is bandaged up but eventually withdrawn when blood is pouring down his face. Backup Orestis Karnezis appears from the bench for his English debut.

64' - The Hornets second is more straightforward, when Christian Kabasele meets Jose Holebas' inswinging corner with a header. Caretaker boss Unsworth's hopes of managing Everton after the international break are suddenly in tatters.

67' - Three minutes later, the underused Ademola Lookman lifts a ball over Watford's midfield and defence and into the vague direction of Oumar Niasse. Karnezis runs to meet the ball but gets nowhere near, and as Niasse readies himself to tap into the vacated net, he's chopped down from behind by Kabasele. Niasse forces the ball in anyway, so Kabasele avoids punishment

74' - In his sixth minute on the pitch, Dominic Calvert-Lewin plants a soft header into the bottom corner for Everton's equaliser. Karnezis' command of the penalty area during the corner routine is weak, reminiscent of Watford first-choice Gomes' early days at Tottenham Hotspur.

90 + 1' - Shortly after Watford fails to restore the lead when Adrian Mariappa heads wide from a corner, Leighton Baines passes temporary gaffer Unsworth and Trevor Steven for the most spot-kicks scored for Everton (24). The penalty is awarded following a clumsy challenge from Holebas on Aaron Lennon.

90 + 11' - Pickford's outstretched leg trips Richarlison during a rush deep into time added for injuries to Watford's Gomes and Kabasele. Ex-Everton midfielder and the Hornets' stand-in captain Tom Cleverley steps up to take the penalty, and slices an awful effort wide.

90 + 13' - Game over.
