Napoli hits free agency as Rangers decline 2018 option

Greg M. Cooper / USA TODAY Sports

The Texas Rangers were busy Monday, making three moves that affect their 2018 roster.

Texas declined its $11-million option on veteran slugger Mike Napoli and its $4-million option on reliever Tony Barnette, while exercising its $6-million option on left-hander Martin Perez.

Napoli will receive a $2.5-million buyout. Barnette's buyout is worth $250,000.

Napoli's reunion with the Rangers - whom he had two previous stints with from 2011-12 and in 2015 - didn't go swimmingly, as the 36-year-old hit just .193/.285/.428 with 29 home runs and 66 RBIs.

Meanwhile, Barnette didn't produce the same quality of numbers in his second season with the Rangers as he did in 2016, fashioning a 5.49 ERA across 50 appearances while issuing almost 3.5 walks per nine innings.

On the other hand, Perez started 32 games for the Rangers and earned a career-high 13 wins in 185 innings. His 115 strikeouts were also a career best.
