Report: Nationals players 'generally upset' by Baker's firing

Charles LeClaire / USA TODAY Sports

Dusty Baker's departure from the Washington Nationals was not well received by many corners of the baseball world - which apparently includes his now-former players.

Sources told Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports that Nationals players were "generally upset" to learn of Baker's firing last week, and are apparently angry over the message it sent to the rest of baseball about the organization.

One source even told Heyman that people within the team are calling it a "train wreck," while players are also angered by what's termed as "uncertainty" around the Nationals as a whole.

Further complicating matters is that not everyone inside Washington's front office may have been on board with the move. General manager Mike Rizzo reportedly "fought for (Baker)" to return before ownership decided to fire the manager anyway, according to Heyman.

Baker - whose 1,863 career wins rank 14th all time and second among managers who aren't yet in the Hall of Fame - was let go after leading the Nationals to a pair of 95-plus win seasons along with back-to-back playoff berths for the first time in franchise history. He was let go 10 days after the Nationals lost their NLDS matchup to the Chicago Cubs, and said in the aftermath of the decision that he was "surprised and disappointed."

As a result of Baker's firing, the Nationals are now searching for what will be their eighth manager since moving to Washington in 2005, and their fourth in the last seven seasons.

Cubs bench coach Dave Martinez has already emerged as a candidate for the job, and will reportedly interview with the Nationals.
