Redskins' Gruden: Wentz progressing faster than any QB I've seen

Count Jay Gruden among those on the Carson Wentz bandwagon.

The Redskins head coach heaped praise on the second-year quarterback for his rapid development ahead of Washington's Monday night clash with the Philadelphia Eagles.

"He's progressed at a rate as fast as anybody I've seen, really," Gruden said, according to Tim McManus of ESPN. "I think he's already proven this short in his career that he's one of the top quarterbacks in the league, quite frankly, and he's going to be for a long time. I don't know how he got to Philadelphia, and I'm very upset about that."

Wentz had led the Eagles to a surprising 5-1 start, tied for the NFL's best record with the Kansas City Chiefs.

Following a rookie season in which he started fast but then struggled for the majority of the campaign, Wentz has displayed the sky-high talent that convinced the Eagles to give up a king's ransom to acquire him in 2016.

"Obviously he's got the big, strong arm, he's got the big body, he can run through tackles, all that stuff, but his poise under pressure is something that you cannot coach," Gruden said. "And he is very, very good."

The 24-year-old pivot has thrown for 1,584 yards with 13 touchdowns to just three interceptions, good for a seventh-ranked 99.6 passer rating.

While Gruden wishes the Redskins weren't facing a quarterback of Wentz's quality, he's relishing the opportunity to avenge his team's 30-17 loss to the Eagles from Week 1.

"Every week it seems like we're playing against an excellent quarterback, and knowing that Wentz is going to be there for a long period of time just puts a few more gray hairs on my head," Gruden said. "But love the competition, and it's our job to get after him and make him uncomfortable."
