Manchester United legend Paul Scholes has interviewed for the managerial vacancy at Oldham Athletic, the club he supported as a boy, according to BBC Radio Manchester.

The Boundary Park coffers are expected to be boosted by investment after the club failed to pay players and staff in September. That possible windfall likely contributed to the job appearing to be one of the most coveted roles in European football. BBC Sport's Simon Stone reported that Clarence Seedorf, the only man to win the Champions League with three separate clubs, was given a tour of Oldham's facilities late last month. And contrary to the Scholes link, The Sun's Alan Nixon believes John Terry's brother Paul is being lined up for the post.

Scholes has no managerial experience, but it will be hoped his high profile helps attract lofty names to Oldham. Before he hung up his boots, Scholes purloined 11 Premier League winners medals, won three FA Cups, two League Cups, and two Champions League titles with Manchester United.

Currently overseeing caretaker duties at the League One side is Richie Wellens, who hails from nearby Moston and represented Oldham during his playing days. Wellens will be familiar with Scholes from his short stint at Salford City, a non-league club part-owned by the retired English international.

Since John Sheridan was sacked when Oldham was bottom of the third tier, Wellens has engineered three consecutive wins and is proving a popular figure with the playing staff. It's understood he would also like to remain in the job on a full-time basis.
