Diego Simeone commits to Atletico Madrid until 2020

Diego Simeone signed a new contract with Atletico Madrid on Tuesday which ties him to the capital club until June 30, 2020.

The Argentinian was previously under terms which lasted until 2020, but made the peculiar step in Sept. 2016 of shortening that agreement by two years. Now, after inking fresh paperwork in the Spanish capital, Simeone is no longer embarking on his final season at Atleti's helm.

The manager was already a popular figure at Atletico Madrid through representing the club during his playing days, but has enhanced his reputation by vaulting Los Colchoneros to the European elite during his time in charge. He was appointed in December 2011, and in his first full season led the team to silverware in the UEFA Super Cup and Copa del Rey.

He went one better in the 2013-14 term, ending an 18-year wait to clinch Atleti's 10th La Liga title. In that season, Simeone also guided the club to the first of two Champions League finals in a three-year span.

Across all competitions, Simeone's record as Atletico Madrid boss stands at 321 matches, 200 wins, and 67 draws. He's additionally helped develop some of the most notable names in Europe, including Antoine Griezmann, Thibaut Courtois, Diego Costa, Koke, Saul Niguez, and Jan Oblak.

Atleti started the season with a draw in Girona and a comprehensive 5-1 victory at Las Palmas, and returns after the international break to take on Valencia at the Mestalla on Saturday.
