Colin Kaepernick remains unsigned with the upcoming season rapidly approaching, but he still has prominent active players in his corner.
Carolina Panthers linebacker Thomas Davis advocated for Kaepernick to join his team and said the quarterback's protest against racial inequality and police brutality certainly wouldn't be a distraction for the organization.
"For me as a player, we would definitely love to have a player like Kaepernick because we know what he has to offer to this game," Davis said to Sports Illustrated's Maggie Gray. "We know that he's a guy that can come in and play right away. He's proven that he can lead his team to the Super Bowl. If you look at his numbers, he's had some pretty decent numbers from a quarterback standpoint. At the end of the day, that's what you want. You want to focus in on football. You know there's a lot that's going on in the outside so I commend Kaep on raising the awareness for the social injustices going on in this world. I would definitely welcome him on as a teammate."
Davis, who has been named to consecutive Pro Bowls is universally considered one of the most respected players in the NFL and his comments may carry weight with Panthers' management. It was noted that Davis advocated for Kaepernick in the event that incumbent starter Cam Newton is unable to play during the regular season, after missing the team's first two preseason contests.
Kaepernick's supporters marched on the NFL headquarters in New York earlier Wednesday and it appears that he's gaining support throughout the league, with many in disbelief that he remains on the open market.
