Report: Mayweather, McGregor must fight in 10-ounce gloves
The recent back-and-forth between upcoming combatants Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor regarding what size boxing gloves they'll wear on Aug. 26 has been all for naught.
Nevada State Athletic Commission rules stipulate that "athletes (boxers/kick boxers) weighing-in up to and including 135 pounds must wear 8-oz gloves in competition, while athletes weighing-in over 135 pounds (junior welterweight class and above) must wear 10-oz gloves in competition. However, athletes weighing-in over 135 but (no) more than 147 may wear 8-oz gloves in competition if both athletes agree to do so in writing on their bout agreement (contract)," according to ESPN's Dan Rafael.
Mayweather and McGregor are contracted to fight at the junior middleweight division limit of 154 pounds, which means they must wear 10-ounce gloves even if both agree they prefer 8-ounce gloves.
It was reported earlier this week that McGregor desired lighter gloves (he is used to wearing 4-ounce gloves in the UFC) and Mayweather released a statement saying he is willing to fight in 8-ounce gloves - a statement to which McGregor responded saying he doesn't actually care about the gloves.
