Chargers place 1st-rounder Williams on PUP list

The Los Angeles Chargers have placed first-round wide receiver Mike Williams on the physically unable to perform list with a back injury ahead of the start of training camp, the team announced Saturday.

Williams recently denied a report that said the back injury could force him to miss his rookie season, and the team announced it's hopeful the pass-catcher won't require surgery.

The Chargers also placed star cornerback Jason Verrett and safety Darrell Stuckey on the PUP list.

A player on the PUP list can be activated to return to practice at any time before final roster cuts.
