Report: Dolphins, Cutler finalizing 1-year, $10M deal

He's back.

The Miami Dolphins and quarterback Jay Cutler are finalizing terms on a one-year contract, sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Cutler's deal is worth $10 million, plus $3 million in incentives, a source told NFL Network's Tom Pelissero.

With Ryan Tannehill's future uncertain following a non-contact knee injury sustained in practice this week, the Dolphins have apparently convinced Cutler to delay his broadcasting career with FOX and return to football.

Miami reportedly fears Tannehill will need season-ending surgery, or at the very least, that he'll miss six-to-eight weeks if rehab is opted for.

Dolphins head coach Adam Gase was Cutler's offensive coordinator with the Chicago Bears in 2015, helping the gunslinging pivot produce the best statistical season of his career.

Based on the money given to Cutler, he should earn the starting job in Tannehill's absence, with Matt Moore as his backup.

Moore could also start a few games to begin the year if Cutler is unable to get up to speed in time, but given his previous experience in Gase's scheme and with over a month until the season-opener, Cutler should have enough time to get acclimated.

Cutler struggled in 2016, starting only five games for the Bears due to injury. However, he was likely the best option at this point to replace Tannehill, even if his turnover-prone style doesn't mesh with Miami's run-first philosophy.

However, with the likes of wideouts Jarvis Landry, DeVante Parker, and Kenny Stills, running back Jay Ajayi, and tight end Julius Thomas, Cutler has the weapons around him to at least keep the Dolphins competitive for however long Tannehill is sidelined.
