Report: Dolphins fear Tannehill needs season-ending surgery

The Miami Dolphins are afraid quarterback Ryan Tannehill will require season-ending knee surgery for the injury he suffered during Thursday's practice, sources close to the situation told ESPN's Jeff Darlington and Adam Schefter.

However, no decision has been made about the potential surgery, sources said.

Instead of undergoing the procedure, Tannehill reportedly could elect to sit out for six-to-eight weeks in order to rest his knee before attempting a return to the field.

During Thursday's practice, Tannehill scrambled outside of the pocket and planted his leg awkwardly before falling to the ground.

Initial reports suggested he'd avoided any structural damage to his knee. However, multiple sources then told Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald that Tannehill's MRI was inconclusive.

The quarterback partially tore his ACL last season, which forced him to miss the team's final three regular-season games and their lone playoff game.

Though Matt Moore is currently projected to take over for Tannehill, the Dolphins could explore external options. Jay Cutler reportedly would be open to delaying his broadcast role at FOX in order to suit up for Miami.
