Report: Ezekiel Elliott could face short suspension after NFL investigation

As the NFL's investigation into domestic violence allegations against Ezekiel Elliott approaches the latter stages, it seems increasingly possible the Dallas Cowboys running back will be subjected to league discipline.

Elliott will soon respond to a report from the NFL that details its findings, and he could face a one- or two-game suspension to open the 2017 season, ESPN's Adam Schefter reports, citing sources.

A decision on the matter has yet to be finalized, as the NFL's investigation process is still ongoing. Referencing an apparent understanding that the league wants to make an example of Elliott, though, Schefter adds that the Cowboys star is "bracing" for the possibility of the short suspension.

"The NFL is looking to pin something on him," one source told ESPN.

The lengthy investigation stemmed from a pair of claims brought against Elliott by his ex-girlfriend, one in February 2016 and one the following July. He was neither arrested nor charged in connection to either alleged incident.

A potential suspension for as long as two games would bring Elliott's status into question for the Cowboys' season-opening matchups against the New York Giants and Denver Broncos.
