Capitals lock up Orlov with 6-year, $30.6M deal

Marc DesRosiers / USA TODAY Sports

The Washington Capitals have re-signed pending restricted free-agent defenseman Dmitry Orlov to a six-year, $30.6-million contract, the team announced Friday.

The average annual value of Orlov's contract will be $5.1 million. Here is a more detailed breakdown of the contract:

Orlov, who will be 26 years old next season, registered a career-high 33 points this past year, averaging 19:32 minutes of ice time per game. He will no doubt be asked to take on a larger role next season, as fellow defensemen Kevin Shattenkirk and Karl Alzner are likely headed elsewhere in free agency.

This re-signing comes about a week after the Caps re-upped winger T.J. Oshie to an eight-year extension. It appears general manager Brian MacLellan is doing everything in his power to keep as much of the back-to-back Presidents' Trophy-winning group as possible.
