Redskins name Doug Williams senior VP of player personnel
The Washington Redskins are looking for some stability in their front office, and they're turning to a franchise legend for it.
The Redskins announced Tuesday that Doug Williams, who became the first black starting quarterback to win the Super Bowl by powering Washington to glory in 1987, has been promoted to senior vice president of player personnel.
Williams will act, essentially, as the team's general manager, sans the title, according to NFL Network's Mike Garafolo. The 61-year-old has been part of Washington's personnel department since 2014.
The Redskins were left without a GM after the team unceremoniously fired Scot McCloughan in March despite back-to-back winning seasons.
Redskins president Bruce Allen said the team will favor a committee approach when it comes to final roster decisions, with Williams, head coach Jay Gruden, and Allen himself all having input.
Williams played for Washington from 1986-89. He put together one of the greatest Super Bowl performances of all time in his second season with the team, completing 18-of-29 passes for 340 yards with four touchdown passes to earn Super Bowl XXII MVP honors in a 42-10 blowout of the Denver Broncos.
