Report: Mets sent staff to check on Harvey during absence

Brett Davis / USA TODAY Sports

As the Matt Harvey saga winds down, a new report has surfaced that the New York Mets sent security to check in on their starting pitcher, who answered the door in his pajamas late Saturday evening, according to Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports.

Harvey is serving a team-imposed suspension after not attending Saturday's game against the Miami Marlins. When he showed up on Sunday - his scheduled start day - the Mets informed him of his three-day suspension, promptly sent him home, and started Adam Wilk in his place.

Harvey reportedly went golfing earlier on Saturday and suffered a migraine in the afternoon which prevented him from attending the game. This new report suggests the Mets seem untrustworthy of their one-time All-Star and 2015 Comeback Player of the Year who underwent surgery last year to fix his thoracic outlet syndrome.

The visit to Harvey preceded his suspension, so whatever the Mets' security staff gleaned from the 10 p.m. drop-in somehow facilitated the disciplinary action.

According to the Mets' side of the story, the team was worried about his well-being, hadn't heard from him, and decided to check in. The Mets feel they were warranted in handing a suspension without pay the following morning because pitching coach Dan Warthen attempted multiple times to reach Harvey before the starter finally conceded that he wouldn't be able to make it in.
