Mets' Familia may need surgery for arterial clot in shoulder
The disabled list of the New York Mets appears to be growing once again.
The Mets announced in a press release Thursday that right-hander Jeurys Familia has been diagnosed with an arterial clot in his right shoulder, which may require surgery.
Familia will fly to St. Louis for further tests and is scheduled to see Dr. Robert Thompson, who performed Matt Harvey's surgery for thoracic outlet syndrome last season.
New York is already without a number of core players because of injury, including Noah Syndergaard, Yoenis Cespedes, David Wright, and Lucas Duda, among others.

In Familia's absence, the Mets will likely slot in Addison Reed as closer. Reed is 4-for-4 in saves this season and was used as closer by manager Terry Collins when Familia served a 15-game suspension earlier this season.
The 27-year-old Familia has appeared in 11 games, fashioning a 3.86 ERA while saving three games in four opportunities.
He led the National League in saves in 2016 with 51 and has saved 103 games during his six-year career, all with the Mets.
