Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton is recovering after going under the knife Thursday to repair a partially torn rotator cuff in his throwing shoulder.

Though the Panthers were initially optimistic that Newton would avoid surgery, the team conceded recently that the procedure was necessary.

Newton is expected to continue working out with the Panthers during their offseason program, and the team said he will begin his rehab program Monday.

But Newton will reportedly be unable to throw for four months. That timeline pushes right up to the start of training camp, so it won't be a surprise if the 2015 NFL MVP starts camp on the PUP list.
