Daniel Jacobs opted against participating in a mandatory weigh-in Saturday morning and will be ineligible to win the IBF middleweight title when he fights unified title holder Gennady Golovkin on Saturday night, ESPN's Dan Rafael reports.
Golovkin holds the IBF, WBC, and WBA titles in the 160-pound class. The latter two organizations do not require a weight check the morning of a fight, but the IBF does.
Both boxers made weight at Friday's official weigh-in, with Golovkin measuring in at 159.6 pounds and Jacobs at 159.8 pounds.
Golovkin weighed 169.6 pounds Saturday morning, narrowly making the IBF's day-of limit of 170 pounds.
Jacobs' decision is reportedly a strategic one. By not attempting to weigh in under 170 pounds on Saturday morning, he can hydrate himself to a greater degree and perhaps improve his chances of winning the fight.
