Byrd Stadium, home of the Maryland Terrapins, will now be known as Maryland Stadium.

The school's board of regents voted to change the name Friday on the heels of a protest from students, according to Yvonne Wenger of The Baltimore Sun. The current stadium was named after Harry C. "Curley" Byrd, a former athletic director and football coach at Maryland who was a proponent of segregation during the civil rights movement.

University president Wallace D. Loh was for the name change.

"Those are not the values of the University of Maryland today," Loh said.

Colin Byrd, no relation to Harry, led a student petition to change the name.

"It's time to say bye-bye Curley, and do it in a hurray," said Byrd, a senior sociology major.
