J.T. Barrett to forfeit scholarship for a semester after OVI arrest
Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer spoke publicly Monday about the arrest of J.T. Barrett, and the quarterback was handed more than just a one-game suspension.
Meyer announced that Barrett will forfeit his scholarship for one semester and undergo counselling through the school, but will have an opportunity to earn the scholarship back. Meyer added that the suspension was the coach's decision, as the signal caller wasn't required to be banned under school policy.
The Buckeyes coach noted that Barrett spoke to him the next day and was "blown away and devastated," feeling like he let the team down.
It remains to be seen how Barrett's arrest for operating a motor vehicle while impaired will impact the starting quarterback job for the Buckeyes. Meyer had announced the week prior that Barrett would take over as the starter in place of Cardale Jones.
Jones will now be back under center for Ohio State's game against Minnesota this week.
Barrett is expected to appear in court later this month regarding the incident.
