UTEP will be without its leading rusher for the rest of the season.
Aaron Jones underwent ankle surgery on Tuesday to repair a torn ligament after going down in Saturday's loss to Texas Tech.
"He's devastated, of course," head coach Sean Kugler told Bret Bloomquist of the El Paso Times.
Jones led the team in rushing this season with 209 yards on the ground. He emerged as a major weapon for the Miners last season, posting 1,321 rushing yards and 14 total touchdowns.
Kugler noted the team will employ more of a running back by committee backfield with Jones out and they may throw the ball a bit more. Expect Jeremiah Laufasa to see an increase in carries with Jones sidelined.
