Urban Meyer expects to make QB decision in 'middle of training camp'

Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer hinted at the Buckeyes' quarterback situation on Thursday.

Many believed the decision to start either Cardale Jones, J.T. Barrett or Braxton Miller would be made when the team opened camp in August. But Meyer said he plans on making the decision much sooner than that, according to Bill Bender of Sporting News.

"I think the middle of training camp," Meyer said. "Every one of them deserves the opportunity, and right now two of them aren't getting it."

Of the three quarterbacks, Jones is the only healthy one. Barrett is rehabbing his ankle while Miller is working on his shoulder.

Meyer said earlier in the month that Jones will take spring reps, while the other two won't play at all. The difficult decision is made tougher with each quarterback sporting a stellar resume.

Miller, the oldest of the bunch, was a stronger Heisman candidate in 2014 than J.T. Barrett was in 2015. Meanwhile, Barrett led the Buckeyes to an electric season when Miller went down in August with his injury.

But after a solid year in which he received Heisman votes, Barrett went down against Michigan in the regular season finale, paving the way for Jones to win the remaining - and most pivotal - three games of the season against the best teams in the nation.

Either way, Meyer has strategically kept his lips sealed as to which one of the players has the upper hand going into the 2015 season.

"By the middle of training camp, I think you have at least a handle on this thing," Meyer said.
