Texas offensive coordinator Major Applewhite has applied at Southern Methodist University for the head coaching position, according to sources of Kirk Bohls of the Austin American-Statesman.
"(Applewhite) could not be reached for comment Sunday," Bohls wrote.
The Mustangs are searching for a head coach to replace June Jones, who abruptly resigned earlier this month for "personal reasons." Former SMU defensive coordinator Tom Mason is serving as interim head coach.
Applewhite was a Texas Longhorns quarterback from 1998-2001, and served on Mack Brown's coaching staff. When head coach Charlie Strong was hired, Applewhite was given a one-year severance package.
