Miami star wide receiver Malachi Toney is dealing with an ankle injury that's put his status in question for Saturday's game against Notre Dame, sources told ESPN's Pete Thamel and Max Olson.
"Malachi Toney sustained an injury during Wednesday's practice and is currently undergoing further evaluation by the team's medical staff. We will share additional updates as appropriate," Miami said in a statement.
Toney will push to play in the pivotal matchup, and his injury isn't expected to be a long-term setback, according to Olson.
The 19-year-old Heisman contender has 73 receptions for 1,027 receiving yards and 13 touchdowns this season.
The top-ranked Hurricanes (8-0) will take on the No. 11 Fighting Irish (7-1) at Notre Dame Stadium.
Notre Dame could be in danger of missing the College Football Playoff with a loss, as the program hasn't beaten a ranked team this season and its final three opponents currently sit outside the Top 25.
