Notre Dame and USC will renew their rivalry beginning in 2030 with a four-game series, the schools announced Monday.
The Trojans will host the Fighting Irish at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum in Week 1 of the 2030 season. USC will travel to South Bend, Indiana, to play Notre Dame on Aug. 30, 2031. The official dates for the 2032 and 2033 meetings remain undetermined, but each game will be played between Weeks 1 and 3.
"USC's historic rivalry with Notre Dame holds a special place in the history of college football, and we are happy to resume a series that means so much to the entire Trojan family," USC athletic director Jen Cohen said in a statement. "It remains important for us to play this game early in the season, as it allows us to schedule competitively with our Big Ten peers and takes into account the health and best interests of our student-athletes and program."
"I think it's great for Notre Dame, great for USC, and great for college football," Notre Dame AD Pete Bevacqua said, per Sports Illustrated's Pat Forde.
The two storied programs will once again compete for the Jeweled Shillelagh Trophy, which was introduced in 1952. The Fighting Irish and Trojans have met every year since 1926 with the exception of pauses from 1943-45 during World War II and in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
However, the teams won't face off in 2026 after negotiations to continue the series broke down last year. At Big Ten Media Days, USC head coach Lincoln Riley lamented the disruption.
"I want to play the game," Riley said last Tuesday. "We would be playing the game had some things come true that were said. Hopefully we get to that point."
A series between the Fighting Irish and Indiana in 2030 and 2031 has been cancelled at the request of the Hoosiers, sources told Forde.
USC and Notre Dame have played 96 times in total, with the Fighting Irish holding a 53-38-5 advantage.
