Belichick 'focused on coaching' North Carolina, not HOF snub
North Carolina head coach Bill Belichick is concentrating on preparing for his second season leading the Tar Heels, opting not to dwell on his omission from the Pro Football Hall of Fame's 2026 class.
"No, I'm focused on coaching this team and focused on, you know, getting Carolina football to the highest level I can," Belichick said when asked about being denied induction, per Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio.
"That's what I've always - I focus on what I can do, and things that are out of my control, I don't worry about," added Belichick.
Although Belichick was the lone coach on the 2026 ballot, the eight-time Super Bowl winner failed to secure 40 of the 50 votes needed from the Hall of Fame's selection committee in his first year of eligibility in January.
This year's class features quarterback Drew Brees, receiver Larry Fitzgerald, kicker Adam Vinatieri, linebacker Luke Kuechly, and running back Roger Craig.
Belichick boasts one of the most impressive resumes in football history. He helped the New York Giants to two Super Bowls as their defensive coordinator (1986, 1990), then led the New England Patriots to six titles as head coach (2001, 2003, 2004, 2014, 2016, 2018). The 73-year-old sits second behind Don Shula on the NFL all-time coaching wins list with 333 total victories, including both the regular season and playoffs.
Despite Belichick's strong case for enshrinement in Canton, Ohio, reports surfaced that past scandals involving the coach, like Spygate and Deflategate, played a role in the committee's snub.
North Carolina hired Belichick in December 2024, nearly a year after he parted ways with the Patriots following 24 seasons. In his first foray as a college head coach, the Tar Heels posted a disappointing 4-8 record last season and missed out on a bowl game.
