Mahomes: Comparison to Nebraska's Raiola means 'I'm getting a little old'
Patrick Mahomes is flattered that Nebraska quarterback Dylan Raiola is mimicking his style of play, even if it's a sign that he's aging.
"It's cool, honestly," Mahomes said Wednesday, according to KCTV. "I was that guy. I grew up watching players. I remember when I (was growing up), I loved Alex Rodriguez, played shortstop, and would try to make plays just like him, and do stuff like that, and it helped me become the athlete that I am."
Mahomes added: "It's just telling me I'm getting a little old."
Mahomes and Raiola have met on several occasions. They both work with health and performance trainer Bobby Stroupe and quarterback trainer Jeff Christensen in the offseason. Mahomes has referred to Raiola as "Lil Cuzzo" and is among the young QBs most notable supporters.
"I know Dylan," Mahomes said. "I trained with him in the offseason. Great kid, a great football player, and I think he’s gonna make his own stamp on the game."
Raiola has drawn several comparisons to the two-time NFL MVP, from his ability to complete off-platform throws to his mannerisms. The freshman passer, who wears No. 15 in honor of Tim Tebow and not Mahomes, has also drawn attention for imitating Mahomes' off-field fashion.
The 19-year-old shared that most of the similarities are just coincidental. He grew up a big fan of baseball before beginning his football career, and he's worn the same hairstyle since the sixth grade.
"I just try to mimic my game after myself," Raiola said in August, according to KETV's Lauren Michelson.
Raiola signed with Nebraska as a five-star prospect in the 2024 recruiting cycle. Following in the footsteps of his father, former Detroit Lions center Dominic Raiola, Dylan is providing an immediate boost to the program.
Nebraska improved to 2-0 on the season with a 28-10 rout of Colorado. Raiola has thrown for 469 yards, four touchdowns, and zero interceptions, with a 72.7% completion rate.
The Cornhuskers will attempt to remain undefeated Saturday when they play Northern Iowa, while Mahomes will lead the Chiefs into a Week 2 matchup against the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday.
