Tennessee agreed to terms on a contract extension with head coach Josh Heupel through January 2029, the school announced Tuesday.

The Volunteers will pay Heupel $9 million per season plus incentives.

"The results over Josh's first two seasons speak for themselves," athletic director Danny White said in a statement. "He and his staff have energized both our football program and our fanbase with an aggressive brand of football, a competitive culture that creates leaders, and a relentless approach to raising the bar every single day."

Heupel, 44, led the Volunteers to an 11-2 record in his second season with the program. Tennessee displayed significant improvement after a 7-6 mark in Heupel's first year at the helm in 2021.

"Our staff takes great pride in representing the Power T, and it's something we never take for granted," Heupel said. "We will continue to work tirelessly to build a championship program that all of Vol Nation and all VFLs can be proud of."

The Volunteers boasted one of the most explosive offenses in the country this past season, leading the nation with 525.5 yards per game and averaging 46.1 points per contest. Quarterback Hendon Hooker spurred the Volunteers to a remarkable campaign that included wins over Alabama and LSU.

Despite losing Hooker to a season-ending injury on Nov. 19, the Volunteers maintained their impressive offense with Joe Milton and recorded a 31-14 victory over Clemson in the Orange Bowl.

Heupel posted a 38-8 mark in three seasons at UCF before joining Tennessee.
