Vanderbilt head coach Clark Lea is confident his program can reach the top of college football.
"We know in time, Vanderbilt Football will be the best program in the country," Lea said Tuesday at SEC Media Days, according to The Tennessean's Nick Gray.
Lea pointed to the support system behind him and the program's plans for the future. He also acknowledged that his aspirations won't come quickly and will be shaped through consistent hard work.
"As I said a year ago, there are no cheat codes, shortcuts, no hacks that will allow this to happen overnight," Lea added, per Gray. "This is still about going the long, hard way, independent of the trends and headlines generating the most attention right now in college football."
The Commodores are about to embark on their second season under Lea. His first year as head coach ended with a 2-10 record as the program averaged just 15.8 points per game and allowed an average of 35.8 points per contest. Lea's side also went 0-8 against SEC competition.
Vanderbilt has posted a losing record in eight consecutive seasons and has never notched more than nine wins in a single season.
