Head coach Butch Davis will depart Florida International following the 2021 campaign, he told The Action Network's Brett McMurphy.

Davis' contract expires Dec. 15. The program denied his agent's request for a one-year extension, McMurphy adds. Davis added that the school told him he wouldn't be returning shortly before his 70th birthday.

Florida International posted a job opening for the head coaching position earlier in October, which Davis said has had a "negative impact" on the football team.

"This year has been a nightmare," Davis said. "You can imagine the players' reaction when a head coach's job was posted online. The administration has been sabotaging the program."

Davis also claimed that he arrived at the school in 2017 only to discover that all the shoulder pads were at least 10 years old, which led to the team using five-year-old pads from Mississippi State.

Additionally, Davis said the Panthers' staff wasn't able to go on the road to recruit over the last two seasons due to financial issues and COVID-19.

The 69-year-old put up a 17-9 record over his first two campaigns with Florida International, though he's gone 7-21 since then.

The Panthers are also on the lookout for a new athletic director following the resignation of Pete Garcia after 15 years.
