Nebraska will retain embattled head coach Scott Frost for 2022 after he agreed to restructure his contract, the school announced Monday.

Frost, who's in his fourth year at the helm, was believed to be on the hot seat coming into the season. He owns a 3-7 record in 2021 and is 15-27 over four campaigns in Lincoln without a single winning season.

"We all recognize that our record has not been what anyone wants it to be," athletic director Trev Alberts said. "I have been clear that I have been looking for incremental progress, and I have seen that in several key areas this season.

"Our team has continued to compete at a high level and the young men in our program have remained unified and show great resiliency, which is an important reflection of the leadership of Coach Frost and his staff."

Alberts added that Frost's salary will drop from $5 million to $4 million next year, and his buyout in 2022 will decrease from $15 million to $7.5 million, according to Mitch Sherman of The Athletic.

"In a way, Scott's bet on himself," Alberts said.

Frost was one of the nation's hottest coaching commodities when he left UCF to take over at his alma mater in 2018. He was believed to be a prime target for Florida before he took the Nebraska job.

While the 46-year-old will stay at Nebraska for at least another campaign, his coaching staff will feature plenty of new faces. Frost decided to immediately part ways with offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach Matt Lubick, offensive line coach and run game coordinator Greg Austin, running backs coach Ryan Held, and quarterbacks coach Mario Verduzco, according to Max Olson of The Athletic.

The Cornhuskers are coming off a 26-17 loss to Ohio State. They'll wrap up the regular season with contests against Wisconsin and Iowa.

Several other Power 5 programs, including LSU and USC, will be searching for a new head coach in the offseason.
