Stanford head coach David Shaw said name, image, and likeness deals could be a useful way to aid recruiting, according to ESPN's Alex Scarborough.

Alabama sideline boss Nick Saban revealed last week that quarterback Bryce Young was nearing $1 million in NIL earnings. Saban added he feels that Young, who has not even started a game yet, was able to get endorsements due to playing for Alabama.

Shaw thinks Saban's comments were a tactic to further entice recruits.

"Nick Saban is smarter than any 10 of us in this room combined," Shaw said Tuesday. "So there's no way that (was) just a throw-in. Obviously, that's a plant to make sure people knew and it's a great way to recruit."

The Cardinal coach noted that Young's financial success was likely derived from Alabama's name value rather than the quarterback's "true market value."

The NCAA approved an interim policy that would allow student-athletes to monetize their name, image, and likeness as of July 1.
