Ohio State athletic director Gene Smith will receive a multi-year contract extension, according to The Columbus Dispatch's Joey Kaufman.

"It's an honor to continue to serve the flagship university in my home state," Smith texted. "I appreciate the support of president (Kristina) Johnson and the board of trustees."

Smith's agreement, which he signed in March, was approved Wednesday by a committee within Ohio State's board of trustees. The full board is scheduled to vote on the deal Thursday.

Smith's extension, which runs through 2026, will pay him more than $2 million per year. He could also earn $1.25 million overall in additional incentives, including bonuses for academic and athletic achievement, according to ESPN.

Additionally, Smith's contract includes a $250,000 buyout if he leaves before July 2024. He can't serve in the same capacity at another Big Ten program for the length of his deal, according to Eleven Warriors' Dan Hope.

Smith was previously rumored to be a candidate to become the next Pac-12 commissioner, per Kaufman. However, he refuted having any interest in the role.

The 65-year-old has been the Buckeyes' athletic director since 2005.
