Clemson defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence will sit out the College Football Playoff National Championship due to his failed drug test, the school announced Thursday, according to Ralph D. Russo of The Associated Press.

Lawrence was initially suspended on Dec. 27 for the semifinal against Notre Dame.

Tight end Braden Galloway and offensive lineman Zach Giella are also banned due to failed tests.

Clemson added that the three players will be permitted to travel with the team for the clash with Alabama and confirmed all have submitted appeals to the NCAA.

Head coach Dabo Swinney said the failed NCAA drug tests were due to a "sliver" of ostarine, which has similar properties to anabolic steroids.

A projected first-round pick, Lawrence racked up seven tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks, and one interception in 13 games this season.
