Wells has led Utah State since 2013 and amassed a record of 44-34.
The Aggies are 10-2 this season. They lost to Boise State last week and missed out on a spot in the Mountain West conference championship game.
Wells won the Mountain West coach of the year award on Wednesday.
Texas Tech fired Kliff Kingsbury on Sunday after leading the Red Raiders to a 5-7 record this season. He went 35-40 in six seasons at the helm.
