CFP director: 'No talk' about expanding playoff

Kim Klement-USA TODAY Sports

To the chagrin of Group of 5 schools, the College Football Playoff format won't expand beyond four teams at any point in the foreseeable future, executive director Bill Hancock indicated Wednesday.

"There is no talk about expansion among the university presidents and the conference commissioners who sit on our boards," Hancock told reporters, via Matt Baker of the Tampa Bay Times. "The CFP works. It works well."

While the exclusivity of the four-team bracket has placed high importance on regular-season outcomes - an element college football is famous for - schools outside the Power 5 conferences have routinely been shunned from the playoff picture.

Last year, UCF was denied a playoff bid despite boasting a perfect record. The Knights wound up meeting, and defeating, Auburn in the Peach Bowl, leading many to believe the school deserved a chance to play for the national championship.

No Group of 5 program has reached the playoff since the format was introduced ahead of the 2014 season.

"Play a good schedule, win your games, and you're going to be in the hunt," Hancock added of UFC and schools in similar situations.

Several coaches from both Group of 5 and Power 5 conferences have lobbied for the playoff to include more teams in recent years, though their motives have been obvious.
