We Need to Talk About: Virginia Tech's awful Twitter game

Let's get one thing clear off the bat: There's a difference between having spirit and being corny.

College football teams do their best to toe the line, but Virginia Tech's Twitter team is swimming alone in the deep end of the corny zone.

It really started to get out of control last year, after longtime coach Frank Beamer announced he'd be retiring at season's end. Virginia Tech couldn't stop paying homage to Beamer, and while the tributes were touching at first, they eventually got out of hand.

Dozens of "#ThanksFrank" and "#GameDay4Frank" posts appeared on Virginia Tech's timeline each day, a large number of which didn't even have anything to do with Beamer or the ESPN show.

It got so bad that the GameDay crew eventually told the Hokies, politely, that it wasn't coming to their town, yet Virginia Tech still kept trying:

... And trying:

... And trying:

For crying out loud, that last tweet came in the middle of the summer.

If you can believe it, the Hokies were still tweeting "#GameDay4Frank" to start the 2016 season, crediting Beamer with GameDay's decision to broadcast from Bristol, Tenn., where Tennessee was clearly the main draw in a matchup with Virginia Tech (sorry, VT fans)!

The Beamer-inspired hashtags have been few and far between since that point, but extreme corniness continues to pop up along the Hokies' timeline.

Exhibit A:

The "big, bad Buckeyes" ... really?

Exhibit B:

An account with over 100,000 followers is struggling to hit double digits in retweets on a post intended to make people laugh?

Come on, Virginia Tech, you can do better than this. Your football team is on the cusp of becoming the ACC Coastal champ. Get a social media team capable of tweeting like one.
