Antoine Davis has ended his pursuit of “Pistol” Pete Maravich's NCAA scoring record.

The Detroit Mercy guard finished four points shy of breaking Maravich's mark earlier this month in a loss during the Horizon League Tournament.

While it looked like Davis' college career was over when the College Basketball Invitational did not extend an invitation to the Titans, he held out hope until Monday that he would get another chance to play, possibly in an inaugural College Hoops Postseason 8.

“I'm upset about it,” Davis said in a phone interview with The Associated Press. "I feel like I got cheated out of something that they can’t ever give back to me. I think it's selfish — and weird — that people emailed or called the CBI to say we shouldn't be in the tournament because they didn't want me to break the record.

“But there's nothing to hold my head down about. I still feel like I’m the best scorer in my generation, especially finishing No. 2 behind him.”

The CBI, which started Saturday, posted pictures on its Twitter account of Maravich and Davis shortly after Detroit Mercy lost at Youngstown State and had talks with the school about a potential invitation. Ultimately, the CBI decided not to give the Titans (14-19) an opportunity to pay $27,500 to play in the 16-team tournament.

“We did receive unsolicited emails and voicemails about Detroit Mercy and some said we don't ever want Pete Maravich's record broken,” said Rick Giles, president of the Gazelle Group that runs the CBI. “The decision we made wasn't based purely on whether we wanted him to break the record or not.”

Jaeson Maravich said he did not have a personal problem with Davis, but he wasn't happy that his father's record had a chance to be broken in a lower-tier, pay-to-play college basketball postseason tournament.

“I think it's a terrrible look,” Jaeson Maravich told the AP. “Your season should be over if you're 14-19.

“This situation is very personal and sensitive to me. But to be clear, I'm not mad at Antoine Davis and I have nothing bad to say about Antoine Davis. My beef is with these tournaments.”

In mid-March of last year, the Titans were below .500 and still played in the postseason. Davis scored 24 points in a loss to Florida Gulf Coast in The Basketball Classic, and Fresno State went on to win the tournament's championship.

Maravich closed his three-season, 83-game career at LSU with 3,667 points in 1970, and his mark has stood for more than a half-century. The dazzling guard, who went on to become a five-time NBA All-Star in a 10-season career, died in 1988 at 40 after suffering a heart attack in California while playing in a pickup game.

Davis scored 22 points in a 71-66 loss at Youngstown State in the 144th game of his five-year career. He missed four 3-pointers, one of them a wide-open look, in the final two minutes of his last college game.

“I had opportunities to do it in the Youngstown game,” Davis said. “I can't be mad about it, but I just don't get why people would go out of their way to say we shouldn't have an opportunity.”

Davis, like all NCAA athletes enrolled when the COVID-19 pandemic hit the U.S., was granted a fifth year of eligibility.

The 6-foot-1 guard does own some NCAA records, including 144 straight games with double figures in scoring and 588 career 3-pointers. He led the nation with 28.2 points per game this season and 159 3-pointers, four shy of surpassing the single-season record set by Stephen Curry at Davidson during the 2007-08 season.

Detroit Mercy coach Mike Davis said his son's pursuit of the scoring championship was not the only the reason the Titans were trying to play again. He said the postseason would have given previously banged-up players a chance to play for a team that was not healthy all season.

“People were trying to paint a picture of us that wasn't true,” Mike Davis said. "The picture painted was that we were tyring to buy a record. The CBI was never going to let us in because of the backlash. The PS8 had teams pulling out, saying they wouldn't play if we were going to be in the tournament.

“It's disappointing that people were calling our school president and athletic director and the people running these tournaments to say don't let us in. We just had to let it go."

The calendar has turned to March, which means college basketball is officially at the forefront of the sports world.

The 2022-23 campaign has been as wide-open as ever and everything is up for grabs with Selection Sunday just under two weeks away and the Big Dance starting a couple of days later.

Here are 10 things to know about the season thus far.

North Carolina on the bubble

North Carolina entered the 2022-23 campaign with lofty expectations. The Tar Heels returned four starters from last year's national runner-up squad and were voted No. 1 in the AP's preseason poll. However, things haven't gone according to plan.

Pete Nance hasn't filled the hole vacated by Brady Manek, Caleb Love and RJ Davis have resorted to hero ball far too often, and the second unit has provided very little production. The school finally picked up its first Quad 1 victory of the season last weekend, defeating then-No. 6 Virginia in Chapel Hill. Still, North Carolina needs every win it can get just to make it back to March Madness.

Kansas in top form

Kansas has a real shot at becoming the first school to defend its national championship since Florida went back-to-back in 2006 and 2007. The Jayhawks have tallied a record-breaking 15 Quad 1 wins despite losing three starters from a year ago, including a pair of first-round draft picks.

Jalen Wilson is a Wooden Award candidate, Dajuan Harris is among the top playmakers in the nation, and KJ Adams is thriving in a starting role. The new additions have been equally important: Five-star freshman Gradey Dick has shot the lights out from deep and Texas Tech transfer Kevin McCullar has been a lockdown defender.

Zach Edey's dominant play

During his first two seasons at Purdue, Edey made the most of his minutes in a timeshare with Trevion Williams. With Williams off to the pros, Edey has taken center stage for the Boilermakers and is succeeding with a heavier workload.

The Canadian has been an unstoppable force on both ends, averaging 22.3 points, 12.9 boards, and 2.4 blocks over 28 appearances this season. He recently joined Chris Webber as the only Big Ten players in the last 30 years to record 600 points, 350 rebounds, and 50 swats in a single campaign.

There's no simple way to defend Edey. The 7-footer is superb at establishing position on the low block and can finish around the basket with his soft hands. When opposing teams double him, he's capable of hitting shooters on the perimeter.

Edey is almost a sure bet to win this season's Wooden Award. That's not bad for someone who began playing organized basketball just five years ago.

Final Four at home?

Ryan M. Kelly / Getty Images Sport / Getty

No school has played a Final Four in its hometown since the Gordon Hayward-led Butler squad in 2010, but there's a good chance that will change this year thanks to the continued dominance of Houston and head coach Kelvin Sampson. The Cougars hold the AP Poll's No. 1 spot and are in line for the program's first top seed in the NCAA Tournament since 1983.

Houston has a NCAA-low two losses on the season, with one against No. 2 Alabama. However, the Cougars are 103rd in KenPom's strength of schedule rating, largely because they play in the American Athletic Conference. While questions about their scoring punch against superior opponents are valid, Marcus Sasser, Jamal Shead, and Co. bring March experience to the table and put a Houston homecoming in the cards.

Antoine Davis chasing Pistol Pete

One of college basketball's unbreakable records may finally fall. Detroit Mercy star Antoine Davis is just 26 points away from leapfrogging LSU legend Pete Maravich as the NCAA's all-time leading scorer in Division I history after the Titans' 81-68 victory over Purdue Fort Wayne in the first round of the Horizon League Tournament.

Maravich's mark has stood for 53 years, with no player coming closer than 418 points until Davis. The fifth-year guard has been an offensive force since arriving on campus, using his quick first step, shot-creating skills, and deep range to light up the scoreboard.

Davis is already college basketball's most prolific sharpshooter, having passed Fletcher Magee's career total for 3-point field goals last January. He leads all players this season in points (28.4 per game) and triples made (155).

Coaches on hot seat

Year 6 of the Patrick Ewing era at Georgetown has gone just like the previous five - a major disappointment. The Hoyas will once again miss the Big Dance and fall short of 20 wins, as they have in every year of the program legend's tenure (excepting their fluke run at the Big East Tournament in 2021).

And yet the biggest high-major failure this season is far and away Louisville. First-year head coach Kenny Payne has led the Cardinals to a dismal 4-26 record studded with losses to mid-major squads in Bellarmine, Wright State, Appalachian State, and Lipscomb, and eight defeats by 20 points or more.

Although it's Payne's debut campaign and Ewing is a Georgetown legend, both big-name programs need to make changes after an embarrassing season.

Brandon Miller

Alabama freshman Brandon Miller is putting up an All-American-caliber season for the nation's No. 2 team, averaging 19.7 points and 8.0 rebounds per game on 42.4% shooting from deep and playing his way to a potential top-five selection in June's NBA draft. He's also the favorite for the coveted Freshman of the Year award.

However, Miller's dominance in Tuscaloosa has been marred by his connection to the fatal shooting involving a former teammate who's been charged with capital murder. On the floor, Miller has put up his best stretch of the season over his last three contests, averaging 28.6 points, including a 41-point explosion against South Carolina.

Big 12's historic success

If everything breaks right, nine of the Big 12's 10 schools could get into the NCAA Tournament, an unprecedented rate of success. The top of the group is as good as ever, with No. 3 Kansas, No. 7 Baylor, No. 9 Texas, No. 11 Kansas State, and No. 22 TCU represented in the AP Poll and Iowa State having been ranked as high as No. 12. All six are locks for the March Madness field, and each one could make noise.

The bottom of the conference is also solid. Texas Tech, West Virginia, and Oklahoma State are bubble teams, and while last-place Oklahoma won't make the tournament (barring an impressive run at the Big 12 tourney), the Sooners did knock off Alabama by 24 in January. This iteration of the Big 12 is not only the best conference in the sport, but it's in the conversation about the best in modern college basketball history.

Wide-open Big East tourney

The Big East remains an elite basketball conference. Four of its schools were voted into the most recent AP poll, led by Marquette at No. 6. While Creighton dropped out of the top 25, the Bluejays were a popular preseason Final Four selection after adding Baylor Scheierman in the transfer portal.

Those two schools, along with UConn, Xavier, and Providence, will receive a bye into the Big East Tournament quarterfinals by virtue of their top-five finishes in conference play. The five programs have victories over one another this season and they all have the talent to make a deep run in March.

However, Villanova's sudden resurgence could threaten the Big East's top dogs at Madison Square Garden next week. Justin Moore's return to the lineup has provided a much-needed spark and could put the Wildcats in a position to steal an NCAA Tournament bid.

Elite mid-majors

Often overlooked until the March Madness bracket is revealed, a handful of elite mid-majors are in line to become this year's Cinderella. Charleston and Florida Atlantic are a combined 54-6 on the campaign, and each has a chance to earn an at-large bid. Both squads feature high-powered offenses and rank in the top 12 nationally in 3-pointers per game.

The team with potentially the best chance to make a real splash in the Big Dance, however, is a familiar name. Oral Roberts brings back star guard Max Abmas and a handful of rotation pieces from the 15-seed that made the Sweet 16 in 2021, and the Golden Eagles also trot out 7-foot-5 Arkansas transfer Connor Vanover at center. A likely 12-seed this go-around, they'll be a trendy upset pick against a power-conference foe in the Round of 64.

40:T44a2,

The calendar has turned to March, which means college basketball is officially at the forefront of the sports world.

The 2022-23 campaign has been as wide-open as ever and everything is up for grabs with Selection Sunday just under two weeks away and the Big Dance starting a couple of days later.

Here are 10 things to know about the season thus far.

North Carolina on the bubble

Kansas in top form

Zach Edey's dominant play

Edey is almost a sure bet to win this season's Wooden Award. That's not bad for someone who began playing organized basketball just five years ago.

Final Four at home?

Antoine Davis chasing Pistol Pete

Coaches on hot seat

Although it's Payne's debut campaign and Ewing is a Georgetown legend, both big-name programs need to make changes after an embarrassing season.

Brandon Miller

Big 12's historic success

Wide-open Big East tourney

Elite mid-majors

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Antoine Davis scored a season-high 42 points and moved into second place on the NCAA all-time scoring list, Damezi Anderson added a career-high 20 points and Detroit Mercy defeated IUPUI 89-77 on Saturday.

Davis, a fifth-year graduate, now has 3,274 points, passing former Portland State star Freeman Williams, who scored 3,249 points from 1974-78. Pete Maravich's total of 3,667 is the last remaining goal.

Jlynn Counter's driving layup with eight minutes to go put IUPUI on top 65-64 then Davis answered with a 3-pointer to start a 14-0 run that put the Titans in charge.

Davis added a stepback jumper and another triple and A.J. Oliver had a 3-pointer before Anderson capped the run with a 3, making it 75-65 with 3:14 to go.

The Titans went 5 of 7, making 4 of 5 behind the arc, in the run while the Jaguars had five turnovers and missed three shots.

TJ Moss added 11 points and five assists for the Detroit Mercy (8-12, 4-5 Horizon League). Anderson had three 3s and went 7 of 7 from the foul line, four coming in the last two minutes when the Titans made 9 of 10.

Davis also had five assists and his eight 3-pointers extended his Division I record to 521, five behind the all-time NCAA mark of John Grotberg, who finished with 526 for D-III Grinnell in 2009.

Counter had 23 points, five rebounds and 5 assists for the Jaguars (3-18, 0-10). DJ Jackson added 17, John Egbuta 13 and Vince Brady II and Chris Osten 12 each.

Davis had 25 points in the first half, his 94th career 20-point game, as Detroit Mercy took a 39-38 lead.

The Jaguars, who have lost eight straight, shot 56% in the first half, and 54% in the second but couldn't keep pace with the Titans, who shot 61% in the second half. Detroit Mercy was 8 of 13 from 3-point range after the break after going 8 of 20 in the first half.

Davis, who leads the nation in scoring at better than 26 points a game, has 12 regular-season games remaining. He has five 40-point games and 32 30-point games in his career.

The Titans are home Monday against Oakland.

DETROIT (AP) — Antoine Davis' journey into the NCAA record book took a fortunate turn when his father lost a job.

The Detroit Mercy guard moved in middle school from Alabama to Houston, where former NBA coach John Lucas put him through grueling daily workouts, and it changed the trajectory of his basketball career.

“His name wouldn't be in the record books if I didn't get fired from UAB," Titans coach Mike Davis said. “Moving to Houston and working out three times a day with John Lucas made him a different player."

Davis is the nation's leading scorer but that doesn't capture it all. Last week, he broke the Division I record for career 3-pointers with a spectacular performance. He made a personal-best 11 3-pointers in a win over Robert Morris, giving him 513 in a career few saw coming when the 142-pound son of the coach stepped on campus in the Motor City.

And after Detroit Mercy plays this Saturday in Indianapolis against IUPUI, there is a good chance that only the late Basketball Hall of Famer Pete Maravich will be ahead of Davis on the NCAA all-time scoring list.

Maravich scored 3,667 points, an astonishing total over three seasons during an era of college basketball without freshmen, shot clocks or 3-point lines. Davis is just 18 points from passing former Portland State star Freeman Williams, who scored 3,249 points in 106 games from 1974-78.

Davis set the 3-pointer mark in his 130th game, four fewer than the previous record-holder, Fletcher Magee, who played at Wofford from 2014-19. He likely will break the all-division NCAA record for 3-pointers set by John Grotberg, who made his 526th career 3-pointer in 2009 for Division III Grinnell.

He is averaging an NCAA-best 26.2 points, the first Titan to lead the nation in scoring since Spencer Haywood in 1968-69, and has scored in double figures in 130 straight games, an NCAA record.

“Those numbers are surreal at the end of the day,” Davis said. "I still probably won’t feel this until after my college career is over, probably later on down the line, but that’s a lot of points and a lot of 3’s made.”

He passes, too, as evidenced by him joining Keydren Clark of St. Peter’s as the two players in NCAA history with at least 3,000 points and 500 assists.

The Titans (7-12, 3-5 Horizon League) are ninth in their 11-team conference, though Davis is clinging to his dream of getting the program into the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2012.

Davis took advantage of an opportunity to play a fifth season, an option for all athletes who were enrolled when the pandemic hit during the 2019-20 season.

Davis entered the transfer portal last spring and was tempted to leave an overlooked basketball program for a major one. Maryland, Georgetown, Kansas State and BYU all offered Davis a chance to play at a higher level.

He had the green light to go, but chose stay despite a lack of fan support at games and financial backing for the basketball program that forces his father to pay a strength coach out of his own pocket to train the slender shooter.

When Detroit Mercy celebrated Davis joining the 3,000-point club by presenting him with a ball on the court before a recent game, there were maybe 200 fans in the stands.

“I just said to my mother, `Where are the students?'” Tamilya Davis said at halftime of a home game against Youngstown State, sitting on a couch in her husband's office under photos of former Detroit coaches such as Dick Vitale. “I don't understand it. ... There's no school spirit."

Maybe bigger crowds are in the future for Davis. The 6-foot-1 guard is generously listed as 165 pounds and his slight frame may give NBA teams pause.

His father is trying to do something about that by hiring a strength coach to personally train him.

“To do the things he’s done at that size and not being wiry strong, but being weak, it tells you about how skilled he is,” Mike Davis said. "And, how much he’s put time into his skill set.”

The 24-year-old Davis was born in Bloomington, Indiana, where his father led the Hoosiers to the 2002 national championship game, and became a skilled basketball player when his father was forced to find a new job a decade ago and landed at Texas Southern.

He began getting homeschooled by his mother in Houston as part of the family's plan to free up his day for Lucas to train him along his other clients in the league and college basketball.

The extended court time also allowed Lucas to change his shot.

Davis holds the basketball in his right hand and steadies it with his left, like many players, and yet when his right wrist flicks on a shot his left palm rotates in to face the basket in a style that’s all his own.

Lucas groomed Davis with those long workouts while requiring him to make at least 500 shots a day while coaxing him to become more competitive.

Davis has shot up to 10,000 times in a day, according to his father, and once hoisted up 60,000 shots in a 10-day period. Against NBA players and college standouts as a teenager, Davis did full court, one-on-one drills and had 100-possession games to test his mental and physical stamina.

“Nobody was too big in the gym to go against the younger kids, so ‘Toine was going against guys like Damon Stoudamire, Steve Francis and Cuttino Mobley,” Lucas recalled. "His gift was, and is, scoring.

“The only equalizer for size is a shot," Lucas said. "If you can make shots, no matter how big or little you are, you will find your way onto the court and there's not too many people who can shoot like him."
