Abdul-Malik Olajuwon, a four-star shooting guard in the 2027 class and the son of Basketball Hall of Famer Hakeem Olajuwon, committed to SMU, he told ESPN's Jeff Borzello.
Olajuwon also received offers from Kansas State, Minnesota, TCU, Texas Tech, and Virginia Tech, according to ESPN. The 6-foot-5 guard landed on SMU after an official visit to the campus last weekend and a meeting with head coach Andy Enfield.
"Coach Enfield is a laid-back guy, but he's intense," Olajuwon told Borzello. "He's not a yeller or a screamer, but he gets his point across. When he talks, the gym becomes silent. Everyone listens to him and respects him.
"My dad was with me on the visit and feels that this is a great decision for me. I also leaned on my older brother, who's been through the process and told me not to think only about basketball, but to think long-term."
Olajuwon, a Texas native, currently attends Florida's IMG Academy. He also played for Canada at the FIBA U18 AmeriCup in June, averaging 9.2 points, three rebounds, and 1.4 assists across five contests to help the Canadians win the tournament.
His father, Hakeem Olajuwon, played nearly his entire collegiate and professional basketball career in the state of Texas, though hours away in Houston. The 7-footer and two-time NBA champion played three NCAA seasons at Houston before being drafted first overall in 1984 by the Rockets, where he spent 17 NBA campaigns.
