Michigan's Howard undergoes heart procedure

Michigan head coach Juwan Howard underwent a successful heart procedure, the school announced Friday.

Howard is expected to fully recover in 6-12 weeks and could return to the program in four-to-six weeks.

Wolverines associate head coach Phil Martelli will act as interim bench boss during Howard's absence.

"We are extremely grateful Juwan's proactive procedure was a success and that he is resting comfortably," said Michigan athletic director Warde Manuel in a statement. "We will continue to support Juwan, (his wife) Jenine, and his family as well as the program throughout his absence.

"All of us at the athletic department have Juwan in our thoughts and prayers. We look forward to Juwan's return when he feels that he has fully recovered."

Howard took the reins at his alma mater in 2019 following six years as an assistant coach for the Miami Heat. The 50-year-old has guided Michigan to a 79-48 mark, including a pair of NCAA Tournament appearances.

Howard was named AP Coach of the Year after leading the Wolverines to a Big Ten regular-season title during the 2020-21 campaign.

During his playing career, Howard starred on the famous "Fab Five" recruiting class of 1991 and helped Michigan reach back-to-back national championship games.
