Texas Tech officially hired former North Texas head coach Grant McCasland on Friday, the Red Raiders announced.

McCasland signed a six-year, $18-million contract to become the next bench boss at Texas Tech, sources told CBS Sports' Matt Norlander.

McCasland's hiring comes shortly after he guided the Mean Green to an NIT championship win over UAB. The 46-year-old went 134-65 over six seasons at the helm, capturing a pair of Conference USA regular-season titles and an NCAA Tournament appearance.

North Texas was seeded 13th in the Big Dance two years ago but managed to upset Purdue in the opening round before bowing out to Villanova.

McCasland's previous head coaching stops include a two-year stint with Division II Midwestern State and one season at Arkansas State. He also spent five years as an assistant under Scott Drew at Baylor.

McCasland will take over for Mark Adams, who stepped down from the Red Raiders' head coaching gig following a "racially insensitive" comment.

North Texas will promote associate head coach Ross Hodge to replace McCasland, Norlander adds.
