McKillop retiring after 33 years as Davidson head coach

Longtime head coach Bob McKillop announced Friday he is retiring following 33 years at the helm of Davidson.

McKillop went a combined 634-380 in over three decades with the Wildcats, leading them to 10 NCAA Tournaments, including the 2022 edition where they fell by a point to Michigan State in the first round.

The 71-year-old also won eight conference tournaments. Seven of those were in the Southern Conference before Davidson left for the A-10 in 2014-15. The program won the A-10 postseason tournament in 2018.

His son, Matt McKillop, will succeed him as head coach.

Golden State Warriors star Stephen Curry, McKillop's most famous former player, extended his gratitude to the coach Friday, a day after winning his fourth NBA championship and first Finals MVP.

Davidson's storybook run to the Elite Eight in 2008 with Curry and McKillop still ranks as one of the greatest years in the program's history. The Wildcats knocked off Gonzaga, Georgetown, and Wisconsin before suffering a narrow defeat to eventual national champion Kansas.

In 2014, the school renamed its court "McKillop Court" in honor of the coach's 25th year in charge.
