Creighton's McDermott: I offered to resign, players wanted me to stay

Creighton head coach Greg McDermott said Wednesday he offered to resign after using offensive racialized language toward his team but that the players didn't want him to.

"This is their team," McDermott said in a taped interview with 1620 The Zone, according to Jon Nyatawa of the Star-Herald. "If they would have chosen to have me walk away, I would have walked away. But that is not what they wanted."

McDermott apologized Tuesday for telling players he needed "everybody to stay on the plantation" in a postgame speech after Saturday's loss to Xavier.

The 56-year-old would not take questions about the issue following Creighton's loss to Villanova later Wednesday. Forward Damien Jefferson also declined to speak on the matter.

The university issued a statement Tuesday condemning McDermott's remarks and said any disciplinary action would remain confidential.
