Iowa State's Haliburton declares for NBA draft

Iowa State star Tyrese Haliburton declared for the NBA draft, he told ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski and Jonathan Givony.

The 6-foot-5 guard had a breakout sophomore year, averaging 15.2 points, 6.5 assists, 5.9 boards, and 2.5 steals per contest while also earning All-Big 12 second-team honors. However, his 2019-20 campaign ended in February after suffering a left wrist fracture.

Haliburton will sign with an agent and forego his final two seasons of eligibility, the school announced Tuesday.

"I want to thank God, (head) coach (Steve) Prohm and his staff for believing in me when nobody else did," Haliburton said in a statement. "The trust they have put in me these last two years has made me the player I am today, but the relationships I've made with everybody have made me the person I am today."

Haliburton is expected to be one of the top point guards available. His 7-foot wingspan, versatility, and playmaking ability set him apart from other floor generals.

Haliburton is the seventh-ranked prospect on the ESPN 100 and is projected to be taken toward the end of the lottery, according to the latest mock draft by The Athletic's Sam Vecenie.
