Memphis' Wiseman suspended 11 additional games

The NCAA has suspended Memphis big man James Wiseman until Jan. 12 as a result of the payments his family received from Penny Hardaway, who was then a booster for the Tigers and is now their head coach.

Wiseman will miss 11 additional games, bringing his total ban to 12 contests. The five-star recruit will also have to donate $11,500 - the amount the NCAA said Wiseman's mother accepted from Hardaway - to a charity of his choice.

Memphis said it will appeal the decision. Wiseman, however, will not play Wednesday against Little Rock.

"Based on case precedent, the circumstances of this case, and other mitigating factors, the university will immediately appeal this decision," the Tigers said, according to Jason Munz of the Memphis Commercial Appeal. "We expect a more fair and equitable resolution, and we will exhaust all avenues on James' behalf. James will not compete in this evening's contest."

The freshman was initially ruled ineligible by the NCAA earlier this month, but he was permitted to continue playing due to an emergency temporary restraining order. He had filed a lawsuit against the association but withdrew it on Thursday.

Wiseman is averaging 19.7 points, 10.7 rebounds, and three blocks in three games with the Tigers this season. He's widely projected to be a lottery pick in the 2020 NBA Draft.
