Lou Anna Simon has announced she is resigning as president at Michigan State.

The announcement comes hours after former school medical doctor Larry Nassar was sentenced to 40 to 175 years in prison for criminal sexual conduct against more than 100 girls and women over the span of more than two decades.

The university has come under fire after many victims argued the school did little after complaints were filed against Nassar.

In her resignation letter, Simon said she had planned to retire in 2016, however, before a transition could commence, a police investigation began into Nassar's case.

"As tragedies are politicized, blame is inevitable. As president, it is only natural that I am the focus of this anger," Simon wrote. "I understand, and that is why I have limited my personal statements ... I am tendering my resignation as president according to the terms of my employment agreement."
