Report: Spoelstra to coach Team USA at FIBA World Cup, 2028 Olympics
The Miami Heat's Erik Spoelstra is in line to be named the next head coach of Team USA, sources told ESPN's Shams Charania.
Spoelstra, 54, is expected to be in charge of the national team for the 2027 FIBA World Cup and the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles.
He will replace Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr, who led the Americans to gold at the Paris Games in 2024. The Heat bench boss was one of three assistants on Kerr's staff at the tournament alongside Gonzaga's Mark Few and Los Angeles Clippers coach Tyronn Lue.
Spoelstra took charge of the Heat in April 2008 and is the longest-tenured head coach in the NBA. He claimed the title after San Antonio Spurs legend Gregg Popovich stepped down in May following 29 seasons at the helm.
Over 17 seasons with Miami, Spoelstra has won two NBA championships and made the Finals on four other occasions.
In in his most recent Finals appearance, he steered a Heat team that finished seventh in the Eastern Conference to the championship series, where Miami lost in five games to the Denver Nuggets. That squad remains the only team to make the Finals after advancing out of the play-in tournament.
Last season, Spoelstra's Heat squad became the first 10th-place team to advance to the first round of the playoffs through the play-in. However, Miami was then swept by the top-seeded Cleveland Cavaliers.
