Report: David Fizdale, Pelicans' Borrego on Suns' head coach shortlist
David Fizdale and James Borrego headline the list of candidates that have advanced to the second round of interviews for the Phoenix Suns' head coaching vacancy, sources told NBA insider Chris Haynes.
Fizdale has spent the past two seasons as an assistant coach for the Suns. The 50-year-old previously served as head coach for the Memphis Grizzlies and New York Knicks, posting a 71-134 record over four seasons.
Fizdale's best campaign came in 2016-17 when he guided Memphis to a 43-39 record and a first-round playoff exit to the San Antonio Spurs. He won a pair of NBA titles in 2012 and 2013 with the Miami Heat as a member of Erik Spoelstra's staff.
Borrego served as an associate head coach for the New Orleans Pelicans last season. The New Mexico native was a longtime assistant in San Antonio for Gregg Popovich, including during the Spurs' 2005 and 2007 championship runs.
Borrego previously went 138-163 over four seasons as the lead man for the Charlotte Hornets. He was reportedly among the Los Angeles Lakers' head coaching targets a year ago before ultimately losing the job to JJ Redick.
Micah Nori of the Minnesota Timberwolves, Sean Sweeney of the Dallas Mavericks, Dave Bliss of the Oklahoma City Thunder, Steve Hetzel of the Brooklyn Nets, and Cleveland Cavaliers assistants Johnnie Bryant and Jordan Ott are the other candidates on the Suns' shortlist, adds Haynes.
