Stephen Curry has been vocal about playing exclusively for the Golden State Warriors, but his decision to sign a one-year, $62.6-million contract extension isn't just about ending his career where it started.
"It's still about winning," Curry told The Athletic's Marcus Thompson II, "and taking the steps necessary to give ourselves a chance. The standard hasn't changed. The expectation hasn't changed."
Curry's new deal keeps him under contract through the 2026-27 campaign alongside Andrew Wiggins and Draymond Green. His longtime backcourt partner Klay Thompson won't be back after joining the Dallas Mavericks this summer via a sign-and-trade deal.
The Warriors' front office has been busy retooling its roster around Curry, adding 3-and-D guard De'Anthony Melton, veteran forward Kyle Anderson, and sharpshooter Buddy Hield.
Meanwhile, Brandin Podziemski and Trayce Jackson-Davis are coming off solid rookie seasons. Former top-10 pick Jonathan Kuminga appeared to turn a corner as well in his third NBA campaign.
With his long-term future solidified, Curry's eyes are set on another Larry O'Brien Trophy.
"It's not different from my perspective," Curry said. "You have an appreciation for the position and the opportunity and the support from people who've been with you on the journey.
"I've always said I wanted to play for one team my whole career. So it's good to get (the extension) question out of the way and give complete focus to basketball and to the season."
