Wembanyama: Winning Rookie of the Year 'not my main goal'
Victor Wembanyama has more on his mind than winning Rookie of the Year as he looks ahead to his first NBA season.
"It's not my main goal," the San Antonio Spurs rookie told ESPN's Malika Andrews. "I know it's gonna come, but it's not what I should worry about, I think, 'cause it's naturally gonna come if I put 100% on the court and sacrifice for my teammates."
One of Wembanyama's biggest goals is to win an NBA championship, and he's confident the Spurs have what it takes to take home another title.
"Everyone wants it, for sure, but some more than others. I know the Spurs, they know how to do it," Wembanyama said. "They've done it in the past multiple times, and they're gonna do it again. I just want it, of course, as quick as possible. But it's gonna come. Someday, it's gonna come, I'm sure."
Wembanyama, the No. 1 pick of the 2023 draft, averaged 19.3 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 2.8 blocks in four preseason games with the Spurs. He'll make his regular-season debut Wednesday against the Dallas Mavericks.
